Distracted Driving is one of the leading causes of truck accidents.
There are several reasons truck accidents can occur. We have compiled a list of the most common causes of truck accidents in Wisconsin.
Tired
Truck drivers not being properly rested and working over the hourly limits set by federal law often leads to crashes. The federal government has established the Federal motor carrier safety act which sets forth the rules and regulations governing truck companies and their drivers. There are specific rules as to how long a truck driver may operate their vehicle continuously as well as requiring log books and documentations to ensure this happens.
Distracted
As with passenger vehicles, using a cell phone or texting on a cell phone is another common cause of truck accidents. Federal motor carrier safety regulations require a truck driver to only operate a phone using hands-free equipment such as a Bluetooth. Additionally, several states make texting and driving against the law and there is much evidence that texting while driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving.
Bad Brakes
Improperly maintained trucks are another cause of truck accidents. Because trucks are so much bigger and way more than passenger vehicles they require a greater stopping distance. This makes it vitally important that the trucks are maintained mechanically safe including having proper brakes according to law.
Speeding
Another large contributing cause of truck accidents is the unrealistic schedules placed upon truck drivers to get their loads delivered by a deadline. This leads to truck driver speeding, riding your bumper, driving erratically and generally driving to an a unsafe manner.
Overloaded
When a truck is loaded past it’s safe operating capacity, it’s harder to control. This all leads to increased stopping difference or the inability to stop, can cause other malfunctions with the truck such as causing it to not tip over, jack-knife or to have a tire blowout.
Bad Roads
Finally, roadway conditions themselves including road construction, unfamiliarity with the roadway and slippery conditions all cause truck drivers to strike other vehicles. Federal regulations require a truck driver to drive below the speed limit in inclement weather. Therefore, although a truck may be operating at the speed limit, they may still be violating federal law if conditions would warrant them driving slower.
